Mosquitoes

Dear All,

Many of you may have seen the article in today Indianapolis Star “Mosquitoes bite Marion County with a vengeance”.  From reading the article, what is typically collected in traps and logged during the first week in July more than doubled this year during that time.  Sounds like our weather right now is going to be good for mosquitoes to be multiplying.  I have attached the brochure from the Marion County Public Health Department about mosquitoes.  Remember, it only takes a very small amount of water to breed mosquitoes and the eggs can remain dormant during dry times.  Make sure there are no places that can hold a small amount of water around or near your home.  One thing that was not mentioned in the brochure are gutters.  If they hold water after a rain, they can become a place mosquitoes lay eggs.  Think about other things you may have outside on your deck, patio, or porch that could hold water, and make sure that water is not left to stand in any container, flower pot, or decoration.

If you notice a lot of mosquitoes in your neighborhood or around your home, call Mosquito Control at 317-221-7440 and ask for them to come out and spray.  This number is also on their brochure.  They need to come out in the evening when mosquitoes are actively flying to be effective.  Now that the weather has cooled off many of you may be outside more during the times mosquitoes are active.  Don’t hesitate calling if there is a problem with them biting in your area.

Please feel free to pass this information on to others, not only in our District 6, but throughout Marion County.  Let’s all do what we can to help keep the mosquito population down.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry

City-County Councillor District 6
