Janice McHenry is a lifelong resident of Marion County, living in Wayne Township until moving to Pike Township in 2001. She has been married to her husband, Fred, since July of 2002. She attended Wayne Township Schools, graduating from Ben Davis High School, and then received her B.S. degree from Indiana University in Bloomington and M.S. degree from Butler University in Indianapolis. She also has completed graduate work from both Indiana State and Purdue University.She retired after 32 years as an elementary school teacher in order to devote her time to the City-County Council. Thirty of those years were at Mill Creek East Elementary School where she, among other things, set up and administered paper and aluminum can recycling programs for her school, developed two small businesses with her students to learn about economy, and created first grade Science, Social Studies, and Math Labs. She also started a Cultural Enrichment Program where students could attend many art related programs and museums that they would not otherwise have had the opportunity to attend.

In addition to teaching, Janice also has had part time employment working at various swimming pools on the Westside including Westwood Country Club, where she was in charge of teaching Red Cross certified swimming lessons and the lifeguards. She taught baton twirling for many years. She had the privilege or working as a Junior Activities Director on a Cruise ship during school vacations for several years. After that experience she owned a small travel business where she planned and took Senior Citizens on trips in Indiana and adjoining states as well as outings in Indianapolis.

Janice has been a Precinct Committeeman and Ward Chairman in Wayne Township, was Assistant Township Chairman in Pike, and has been a three time delegate to the Indiana State Republican Convention. She is a member of several Republican Clubs serving as Chairman of different committees as well as holding various offices in all of them. She also has volunteered for many campaigns for local, state, and Federal candidates and office holders.

Her past community work included serving on the Division of Equal Opportunity Advisory Board, serving on the Poor Relief Committee in Wayne Township and starting a children’s book program. She also has been a key person in two successful tree plantings along Reed Road. She has helped with several non-profit organizations as well as various neighborhood projects.

Presently she is on three committees of the City-County Council: Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Metropolitan Development, which she chairs. She also represents the council on the IMAGIS Board and Marion County Council on Aging.
