Library Calendars for Wayne, Pike, and Eagle for this month

Dear All,

Attached are the Library Calendars for Wayne, Pike, and Eagle for this month.  All three of our local libraries have programs that are tailored for children, teens, adults, and all ages.  Check them out and see if there isn’t something that would be of interest to you and your family.  Hours for the libraries are the same, except for Eagle which is closed on Sunday.  Please note that all our libraries are closed December 24th and December 25th for Christmas.

Below is something that I copied from the Eagle Calendar.  Being a former elementary teacher I know how important it is to read to children from an early age and felt that this is important information that needed to be shared not just on a calendar, but in the body of my email.  Do encourage reading at an early age.  Bedtime stories have always been a terrific way to get children to settle down for the night, but reading can be done anytime during the day as well.  It certainly is a special time when you are together and reading a book.  I used to love to have my mother read to me as a child – and I am sure she got tired of rereading my favorite books and stories over and over, but I never tired of them (and still have one of my favorites, The Jolly Jump-ups Journey Through Space).  Help make lasting memories to the children in your life.  Remember when Christmas shopping for a special gift for a boy or girl that a book will be a friend and a treasure.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry
City-County Councillor District 6

“Daily reading to infants, toddlers and preschoolers is the best way to establish a habit that will benefit them for a lifetime,” according to Abby Brown, IndyPL’s Early Literacy Specialist. “Whereas 1,000 books may sound daunting, if a parent reads one book a night to a child for three years, they will have read 1,095 books!”
You can do it and we can help! How to participate:
Register at any IndyPL location
Take home a tracking sheet to log their first 100 books
Books can be from home or the Library and can be read repeatedly. If you read The Cat in the Hat 5 times, that counts for 5 books.
After completing the first tracking sheet, return it to the Library to receive a progress sticker and additional tracking sheets another 100 books.
Prizes will be awarded for levels of 100, 500 and 1,000 books read.
