School

I want to take time to give a THANKS to all of you who donated school supplies for our area schools.  This was really great for the first year of collecting school supplies and made for a much larger distribution area and more supplies given than I could do alone.  Certainly do appreciate those who either brought them to my Town Hall Meeting, took them to Flanner and Buchanan, or took them to Eagle Creek Park and dropped them off at the two gates and the Earth Discovery Center.  I was able to divide out the donations and took them to 6 of the schools that students from District 6 attend.  Attached is a picture of just some of the supplies that were loaded into my trunk ready to distribute.  I will be doing another distribution again in a couple of weeks with supplies that have come in since I delivered to the schools.  In talking with those who helped, and the appreciation of the staff from the schools, this will become an ongoing project.  So start thinking ahead for next year and if you see some good sales on school supplies – stock up!

Dear All,

Just a reminder that for some students school started this past week and the rest are starting this coming week.  Please remember when you are driving to observe posted speed limit (25 mph) signs in school zones.  I have attached the new signs that you see in many school zones now.  They will be flashing when you are to slow down.  This is very helpful with so many different school calendars for us to know when it is a School Day and schools are in session.  For everyone’s safety, please pay attention to these signs.

Also, don’t forget to stop when school buses are loading and unloading children and watch in and around schools for buses as well as cars dropping off students to be entering and exiting.  Remember, children are excited when they are going to bus stops or walking to school when they see their friends, etc. and especially when they are going home.  Be especially careful in neighborhoods and other areas where children could be walking and not paying attention to the roads or what they are doing.

Let’s all help make it safer for the boys and girls as they get started on their new school year.

Lastly (and to keep from sending out too many emails), I want to remind you of the Flap-Jacks 5K Walk/Run that will be held on August 20th starting at 8 a.m. at Ben Davis High School.  The early entrance fee has been extended through Aug. 8th, so if you have not signed up yet to participate now is still a great time to register at the $25 per person/$60 a family rate.  The money raised from this fundraiser will go to help with bringing the B&O Trail from Raceway Road (where it stops currently) to Speedway – a distance of a little over 3 miles, through the southern part of District 6.  This will go through, be connected, or close to quite a few of our neighborhoods, churches, and schools.  When completed it will be an asset to the area and give families a chance to safely enjoy biking, walking, running, skating, etc. on the trail.  Hope many of you walkers and runners out there will sign up today.  It should be a lot of fun!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!  Enjoy!
