Dear All,

Indy Parks is able to bring back their Concerts and Movies in the Park at four of our larger City Parks this summer. Many events are starting in June and most are free (or in Eagle Creek Park’s case, with park entry fee). This is a terrific opportunity to enjoy a relaxing evening outdoors at one of our Indy Parks. There is a wide variety of music, so take a look at the schedule and find the ones that interest you.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry

Dear All,

Below is information that I received today about the Modern Rockville Road project that will be between High School Road and Raceway Road. Maybe some of you attended one of the two virtual public meetings and/or filled out the questionaire. This tells a little about the input they received from the public as well as next steps. I will continue to keep you updated on information I receive as I know many of you do use Rockville Road or travel to areas that is impacted by the traffic from it. Hope this is helpful in keeping up on what may be of interest to you not only now, but in the future.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry

Modern Rockville Road

Public provides input into Rockville Road design in Marion County

INDIANAPOLIS – The Modern Rockville Road project team is reviewing public input received for the section between High School Road and Raceway Road and expects to recommend a preferred design option later this year.

Design optionsThe Modern Rockville Road project hosted two virtual public meetings on potential design options earlier this year and collected input following the meeting using an online and paper comment form.

The public identified the top two design options as adding lanes to Rockville Road or leaving this section of U.S. 36 in Marion County as is. The public also asked the project team to review and consider additional options including roundabouts, dual left-turn lanes at intersections, locations for U-turns, and an expressway similar to Keystone Parkway in Carmel.

Public meeting materials and a two-page summary of comment form responses are available on the Project Documents page at ModernRockville.com.

Sidewalk optionsSidewalk Options

Any improvements to Rockville Road would include pedestrian facilities.

Along the north side of Rockville Road, the public was asked whether to include a wider path for bicycles. Nearly half of respondents preferred a 10-foot-wide multi-use path with grass buffer separating users from traffic.

Building on this input and considering nearby traffic, the project team is exploring a five-foot-wide sidewalk with a five-foot-wide grass buffer along the south side of Rockville Road.

Center median gaps for left turnsLeft Turns

The public was also asked where to add gaps in the medians for left-turning traffic.

Any improvements to Rockville Road would replace a portion of the center turn lane with a raised center median. Raised medians limit potential crash conflicts and can be designed to calm traffic speeds.

Public responses varied from maintaining the existing full left-turn access to limiting left turns to major intersections only. The top responses entered were for Sigsbee Street, which serves Westlake Elementary School, and the Eleanor Street/Heather Drive intersection. The project team is evaluating the traffic data and the comments received to find the right solutions among the various options.

Longer sections of center medians without gaps would be available for low-maintenance landscaping. More than a dozen individuals and organizations expressed in helping with the upkeep.

Neighborhood Meetings

Following the virtual meetings, the project team met with elected officials and the Rockville Road neighborhood between High School and Girls School roads. Neighborhood representatives provided additional information and expressed concerns about both the existing Rockville Road and potential improvements.

The Modern Rockville Road project team is available to answer questions and to meet with additional neighborhoods and business organizations. Requests may be submitted by email to INDOT@indot.in.gov or by calling 855-INDOT4U (1-855-463-6848).

Next Steps

INDOT’s project team is reviewing the public input collected and performing additional engineering analysis. A more detailed project proposal and budget will be presented for additional public input, which is expected later this year.

The project team will also monitor the performance of two neighboring construction projects. Work began recently to widen US 36 from 800 feet east of Raceway Road to Shiloh Park Drive in Avon, across from Target. Additionally, a new turn lane is being built this year for eastbound Rockville Road traffic turning right onto High School Road.

Should a construction option be selected, INDOT would bid the project and begin construction starting in 2023 with construction taking two years to complete.

The public may follow the project on Facebook or Twitter and sign up for project updates by e-mail or text message at ModernRockville.com.

Dear All,

Many of you may remember Jackie Nytes, Indianapolis Public Library CEO, and her “Love Your Library Tour” that had been held in years past. These had occurred during the month of February where she hosted meetings about our library system at all of the libraries. Due to COVID she is doing things a little bit differently this year.

Jackie Nytes is stopping by every Library branch throughout the month of May for an informal chat. She welcomes everyone to stop by to talk about how the libraries are doing, how they can serve you better, and to share their new strategic plan. The three libraries in our area’s dates and times are:

Eagle Branch – Friday, May 21st, from 10 a.m. – noon

Pike Branch – Wednesday, May 26th, from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Wayne Branch – Friday, May 28th, from 10 a.m. – noon

There is also one online session for those who prefer to participate from home on Tuesday, May 25th, at 6:30 p.m. Registration is required for that. Go to the Indianapolis Public Library’s Web Site and to their events page in order to register if you want to participate in their Zoom meeting.

Hope many of you will be able to drop by and say “Hi” as well as chat with our Indianapolis Public Library CEO, Jackie Nytes. I have attached one of the flyers for more information. Don’t forget to check out what is new at the library while you are there.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry

Dear All,

While there is a lot of information below, this is the latest that I have received from INDOT (Indiana Department of Transportation) about the north split closure that is scheduled to start on Saturday, May 15th. I thought that it was worthwhile in making sure as many people as possible see this, as it is going to be a long, involved project. Remember, even if you do not travel through Indianapolis on I-65 or I-70, this still may affect you as traffic will be heavier on I-465 since those who normally go through downtown will most likely be going around the city to get to destinations. See the information below to learn details or go to northsplit.com. I do hope that this information is helpful as you drive to where you need to go. I will also try to keep updated information on my web page at “Janice McHenry – Former City-County Councillor”.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry

Dear All,

I have some more information about road work that is being done close to many of us and may slow down how we get around. This information will affect those of you who use I-65 around 71st Street and Eagle Creek. While most of the work will be taking place on bridges in this area from 9 p.m. – 6 a.m., the I-75 southbound ramp to 71st Street will be fully closed from May 3rd – 12th. See the info from INDOT (Indiana Department of Transportation). Please see the News Release for more information.

It seems I have been giving out a lot of information lately about projects that INDOT is doing that may affect many of us. While we are experiencing some detours, slow downs, and additional traffic in other areas – in the long run it is going to be nice to have these improvements. Drive safely and carefully, and when in work zones be sure to slow down and watch carefully for workers.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry

ear All,
