Good afternoon!
We quickly just want to provide a heads up to our valued community members. There has been a trend in the US lately involving the theft of Kia and Hyundai vehicles. There are TikTok videos explaining exactly how to steal them. Many teens have watched these videos and some have used the video to steal these aforementioned vehicles. Yes, we have had these incidents occur in Indianapolis. Yesterday, our outstanding Northwest District officers apprehended three suspects after they stole a Kia! Fortunately, there are a lot of Kia and Hyundai vehicles out there so please don’t let this worry you too much if you happen to own one. We simply just wanted to give you a heads up and provide some pointers on how to better protect your vehicle.
Recommendations:
- Utilizing a steering wheel lock “club”
- Installing a car alarm
- Park your Kia/Hyundai in a well-lit area or garage
- Do not leave valuables or hard to replace items in the vehicle
- Park in a way that makes it difficult to drive off with the vehicle quickly (such as parking another vehicle behind it in the driveway)
Below is a link to a YouTube video from ABC 7 Chicago News about this particular situation. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to ask.
As always, thank you for being part of the IMPD Northwest District community!
Kind regards,
Officer David Waterman
