crime report for July 2017

Dear All,

Attached is our District 6 Crime Report from IMPD for the month of July.  At 95 total incidents we tied with May and are up from June.  If you will notice though, there are incidents in neighborhoods that we usually don’t see problems in.  Could this be because we are getting too comfortable with not having larcenies or home burglaries in those areas?  Are people thinking that it won’t happen in my neighborhood?  I don’t know the answer to that, but I do know that being pro-active is much better than being reactive, especially when it comes to something that affects our homes and property.

I have heard from some of the people who have been victims of a crime.  If they have had any type of identification stolen (be it their Social Security Number, drivers license, credit card, bank info, etc.) it is a huge hassle to go through, and very time consuming.  If someone breaks into a vehicle or a home, it is the repairs that must be done as well.  And it certainly gives you an uneasy feeling to know that someone went through your belongings and was inside your vehicle or home.

I know we all get a little careless at times, we are in a hurry, and think, “I’ll only be gone a few minutes” or “I’ll be right back”.  But those few moments it takes to make sure our homes and vehicles are locked, there is nothing left outside to take or nothing in our vehicle that looks like it might be something, our garage doors are closed, that lights are turned on, that you have set your alarm (if you have one) can make a difference and save you hours of work and repairs later.

I am not going to list tips this month, but many of the tips I would list are really in the paragraph above.  Please take time to reread that paragraph again and follow those tips.  By doing so you may keep yourself from being a victim and being on a future crime report.

Remember, report all crimes.  This is a huge help to the police in seeing patterns and patrolling areas.  If it is happening now, if you see or hear something suspicious, call 911.  Remember, if it doesn’t look right to you, it won’t look right to them – call 911.  If it is not happening now you may call the non-emergency number at 317-327-3811.  But do report any larcenies or burglaries as soon as you can.

Please feel free to forward this information on to others in our district, and I encourage you to do so.  By all working together, taking those extra moments to be pro-active, and reporting to 911 when we see something that doesn’t seem right, we can help make our area safer from crime.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry
City-County Councillor District 6

P.S.  I would like to thank the neighborhoods and the Town of Clermont that hosted “National Night Out Against Crime” events.  I enjoyed attending the ones in our District.  From the Ice Cream Social, to the Pizza Party, the Cook-outs and pitch-ins, as well as the event in Lions Club Park, everyone seemed to be having a great time visiting with their neighbors and getting to know one another better.  I also know that the IMPD officers enjoyed making rounds as well (and the Clermont officers enjoyed being at the Park) and hope that you enjoyed seeing them.  Commander Jefferson of our Northwest District attended at least one event in our district that I know of, as I saw him there.  Thanks again to all the hosts and attendees at “National Night Out Against Crime”.  Hope those of you who had events this year will do so again next year, and those neighborhoods who didn’t have one this year – it is not too early to start thinking about doing something next year, give it some serious thought!
