Eagle Creek Park and City pools

Dear All,

Can you believe it is almost August?  Where is the summer going?  Attached is the Eagle Creek Park Calendar for next month.  The summer concert series on Wednesday evenings runs through August 14th.  If you have not had a chance to go out and enjoy a relaxing evening with some great music by the water there are three more Wednesday evenings yet this summer to do just that.  Please note that on Saturday, August 10th, and Saturday, August 17th, the park will not have access until 11:00 a.m. due to triathlons taking place both of those mornings.  A lot going on at Eagle Creek Park, the Earth Discovery Center, and the Ornithology Center.  When you are out for a visit check out what is happening in our special areas.

Our Back to School Supply Drive is in full swing.  Below is a picture taken at the Earth Discovery Center of some of the items we have already collected.  We will be collecting school supplies until August 11th, so next time you are in a store, please pick up a few items and bring them to either the 56th Street Gatehouse, the 71st Street Gatehouse, or inside the Earth Discovery Center.  You do not have to enter the park to drop off supplies at either gatehouse.  You probably have seen a lot of organizations giving away school supplies or collecting supplies.  The ones we are collecting go directly to the 11 elementary schools that serve students from our District 6, then the staff at those schools can give the supplies to the boys and girls who need them the most.  Hope you will donate generously to this project.

Please forward this information on to your friends, neighbors, and others who may not know about our School Supply Drive.  We have tried to reach more people this year by distributing informational cards directly to homes in many parts of the district.  Perhaps you have received one of these cards at your home, as so far about 7,800 have been distributed.  We would like to get even more of these passed out, as it is another way of letting people know what is going on.  If you would like to help in a neighborhood in District 6 that has not been reached yet, please let me know by replying to this email.  Would really enjoy more help with getting the word out about this project as it can help a lot of children get off to a better start of their school year.

Below is information from Indy Parks about the rest of the summer’s schedule for the City pools, Eagle Creek Beach, and the spray grounds.  Unfortunately, with the lifeguards going back to school, there is not the staff to keep all of the pools open.  Two of the Indy Parks pools will be open on weekends through Labor Day and the spray grounds are open throughout August.  You may want to check out the upcoming schedules for Thatcher and Krannert Indoor Pools as well.

Hope you will enjoy one or more of our Indy Parks soon.  Remember there are a total of 211 parks in our City which are a variety of sizes and offer different things.  Take some time to discover one you have not been to before as well as visit your favorites.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry

City- County Councillor District 6
