new equipment

Dear All,

The other day a friend forwarded me the information below about the new equipment that was purchased last year by the City.  Testing will be finished soon and the new equipment will be put out on the roadways then as the weather allows.  As soon as the weather gets better and spring does actually arrive, hopefully we will see a lot of things that were planned and budgeted for last year for 2020 happening.

Please remember to be calling in potholes and other issues to the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622 or using the RequestIndy app on your phone.  This is the way that they get put on a list to be addressed.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry

INDY DPW WILL SOON UTILIZE NEW EQUIPMENT THAT SUPER-HEATS ASPHALT FOR PAVEMENT SURFACE REPAIR

INDIANAPOLIS—As frigid temperatures and extended periods of precipitation continue to propel street deterioration, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) is soon planning to deploy two new infrared P200 asphalt heaters by Heat Design Equipment, Inc., capable of raising pavement surface temperatures such that asphalt can be easily worked and re-compacted to repair crumbling road segments.

“With the freezing precipitation expected today, along with temperatures nearing zero this week, it’s very timely that we’re finalizing testing on new equipment to repair breakdowns in our asphalt roadways,” said Dan Parker, Director of Indy DPW. “We’re excited to continue putting tools in the hands of our street maintenance crews that go above and beyond simple filling operations.”

Indy DPW expects to complete final testing of the infrared heaters soon, with the new equipment out on Indy’s roadways in the next few weeks as weather allows.

A video of the initial demonstration is available here.

When pavement is dry, each infrared heater will be able to raise full sections of deteriorated asphalt to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing crews to rake over and smooth out cracks and holes before workers tamp down the newly restored street surface. At 3 feet wide, the infrared heater is set on casters so it can be pulled behind a truck, super-heating long segments of pocked pavement to be re-compacted and smoothed.

Fewer cracks throughout an entire stretch of roadway better seals the road against the deterioration that comes when precipitation seeps into asphalt and then freezes.

The new heating process will be most effective when hot-mix asphalt is available to add additional material as necessary to level out a roadway. DPW anticipates hot-mix asphalt may be available from asphalt plants near the end of February or beginning of March, as longer periods of dry weather allow.

This purchase of additional equipment for 2020 follows a pattern of recent targeted investment both in street maintenance equipment and personnel. In 2019, DPW created a dedicated Street Maintenance Team to address deteriorated roadways with longer-lasting strip-patching and resurfacing operations; this new team and its new equipment completed 64 intensive asphalt projects at locations across the county in 2019.

Indianapolis residents are encouraged to identify potholes and other street maintenance issues to Indy DPW by reporting them via either the Mayor’s Action Center hotline or via the City’s online tools. To report a pothole:

  • Call the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622; or,
  • ‘Create A New Request’ via RequestIndy by navigating to maps.indy.gov/RequestIndy/ or by downloading the RequestIndy app; or,
  • Use the Indy Pothole Viewer to report a location (maps.indy.gov/indypotholeviewer/) and then view information about where potholes have been reported across the county.

More information on the P200 infrared heater is available at the manufacturer’s website.
