City’s potholes

Dear All,

We have all been experiencing them, especially the last few weeks with all of the snow, ice, freeze, thaw, freeze harder, rain, etc. that we have had.  You are right – potholes!  Even those that they filled before the weekend snow storm are now back, or new ones have appeared.  Starting tomorrow hot asphalt will be used to patch these potholes!  This will last a lot longer than the cold patch that they had been using, and hopefully we are done with snow, plowing, hard freezes and thaws, and the rest of winter that is so hard on our streets and roads.
While I have been driving throughout our district and reporting as many of the potholes as I see, I am not everywhere.  And what street may not have potholes one day, the next day it does.  Also, I have not been in many of the neighborhoods, but concentrating on the thoroughfares.  As you encounter potholes, if you would please report them ASAP, it would be a huge help in getting them filled.  DPW does not know that they exist unless they are reported.  Don’t think, “Oh, I am sure someone has already reported that, as it was there earlier.”  What if everyone thought that, nothing would get reported.  And as the snow melts off those areas that were either packed with snow or where ice had formed, new potholes may surface.  Please contact the Mayor’s Action Center at 327-4MAC, or use the other two methods of reporting potholes in the article below.

Let’s get as many of these potholes turned in quickly so that they get them filled and they can work efficiently in an area.  Thanks so much for helping to keep our district a better place to live.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry
City-County Councillor District 6

CITY BEGINS HOT ASPHALT POTHOLE PATCHING MARCH 6

INDIANAPOLIS – Warmer temperatures are a sure sign of spring for Indy residents. For the City’s Department of Public Works, it’s the reopening of hot asphalt plants and the chance to attack the City’s potholes full force with permanent patching material. Crews will begin using hot mix asphalt to patch potholes on City streets beginning Friday.

DPW is activating 10-15 crews five days a week to fill pothole service requests reported to the Mayor’s Action Center (MAC). Since January 1, 2015 DPW crews have completed more than 2,000 pothole service requests, which can represent up to a dozen potholes each.

“We are making great progress in filling potholes this spring, but we need Indy drivers to help us identify all of the locations where work needs to be done,” said Andy Lutz, DPW Director. “The switch to hot mix asphalt, along with more than $34 million in planned street resurfacing allows DPW to address as many potholes as possible.”

The City is asking drivers to report potholes they encounter to the MAC. Potholes reported to the MAC are typically filled by DPW crews in less than 4 days.

Drivers should report potholes to the MAC using one of these tools:

  • Call the Mayor’s Action Center at (317) 327-4622.
  • Use the RequestIndy mobile app . Learn how to get the RequestIndy app on your iphone or android device at indy.gov/mac.
