I-65

Dear All,

Wanted to make sure that everyone had the latest on I – 65 as this work gets closer.  While I sent out the information a couple of weeks ago, the below is the reminder that I received today and I wanted you to have it as well.

Some of you may say, “This does not affect me, I don’t travel I – 65.”  Please look over the attachment that Indianapolis put out on this.  It shows the detours.  This is where it will affect those who not only travel into Indianapolis on I – 65, but also those who travel on Lafayette Road, MLK Street, 16th Street, and other streets that lead into Indianapolis.  Remember, all the traffic that normally uses I – 65 into downtown and the Indianapolis Downtown area will now be using the streets that many of you may travel.  Also, remember that many people will use other streets that go into Indianapolis that they would not normally use to avoid traffic on the suggested alternative routes.  So please plan accordingly and allow for extra time during the construction on these bridges on I -65.

Remember that there are two projects that will be happening at the same time.  The one, which is on the border of our district, will be closing I – 65 southbound south of 71st Street.  The 71st Street Exit will still be open (by Eagle Creek Park), but you will not be able to go south between 71st Street and Lafayette Road.  You will be able to get onto I – 465 from I – 65, but will not be able to stay on I – 65 and go south toward the Lafayette Road and other southern exits.  This will affect those of you who live in the very northern part of the district the most, but may affect others who travel on I – 65 north.

The other project will affect those of you who travel I – 65 into Downtown Indianapolis or travel I – 65 to I – 70 on the east side or I – 65 to the south side.  Southbound traffic will not be able to travel south of 21st Street.  I – 65 will be closed between Meridian Street and 21st Street.  This will affect northbound traffic coming out of downtown as well.  Through traffic (I – 70 east & I – 65 south) should use I – 465.  This will also affect people who travel into Indianapolis from the west side as the traffic will be going off of I – 65 onto other streets, which will add a lot more cars and trucks onto those streets.

While those of us who use I – 65, as well as many others, will be inconvenienced and need to allow additional time as we go about our daily lives, this is work that is being done to make us safer as these bridges age.  Please be patient during this time.  The attachment does show the official detours and suggested alternative routes.

Feel free to share this information with others, not only in our district, but throughout the area and those who may be using I – 65 from the north.  I do hope that this is helpful to many people.

Sincerely,

Janice McHenry
City-County Councillor District 6

One Week until I-65 Closure in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is one week away from the 35-day closure of I-65 on the northwest side and downtown Indianapolis to rehab seven bridges.

Southbound I-65 between the I-65/I-465 interchange on the northwest side of Indianapolis will be closed. During the closure, I-65 southbound traffic on the northwest side will be detoured via I-465 South or I-865 East.

The project will also close both directions of I-65 between Meridian St. (exit 113) and 21st St. (exit 115) in downtown Indianapolis. The entrance and exit ramps at the Dr. Martin Luther King St.//West St. interchange (exit 114) will also be closed. The entrance ramp from 21st St. to northbound I-65 will remain open.

INDOT encourages motorists to plan ahead, find alternate routes and expect detours before and during the closure.

The closure is anticipated for Sunday, July 1 and expected to reopen on Sunday, August 5.
